A taste of Mexico is coming to the shores of Canonsburg Lake.

Mad Mex restaurant is targeted to open in mid-June in North Strabane Township. It will occupy the space where On Deck Bar and Grill previously operated, on Lakeside Drive North. Called Mad Mex Lakeside, the restaurant will be off Route 19, across the lake behind Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and across from Little Lake Theatre.

A member of the marketing team at Big Burrito Restaurant Group, the Pittsburgh-based owner of the Mad Mex chain, confirmed the plans Monday. There is a “Coming Soon” sign near the intended North Strabane location.

Mad Mex is recognized for its Mexican cuisine and margaritas.

The spokesman said the lakeside location – and corresponding views – appealed to the firm, which plans a 5,000-square-foot restaurant plus patio. He said there will be seating for about 200 and parking for 150 vehicles, but was unsure of the number of employees.

This will be the 14th Mad Mex restaurant and eighth in the Pittsburgh region. The other local locations are in Scott Township, Robinson Township, Oakland, Shadyside, Cranberry, North Hills and Monroeville.

All but one of the 14 are in Pennsylvania, including three in the Philadelphia area and one each in Erie and State College. Columbus, Ohio, also has a Mad Mex.

Big Burrito Restaurant Group, based in Pittsburgh’s East End, also owns and operates five individual restaurants in Pittsburgh: Casbah, Eleven Contemporary Kitchen, Kaya, Soba and Umi.
