Interstates 70 & 79 intersect near the City of Washington and provide vital links to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the cities of Erie, Pittsburgh and Morgantown, WV and points to the west. Route 22, traversing the northwestern sector of the county, also acts as an important connection with the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, the city of Pittsburgh and cities in West Virginia and Ohio.
There are 70 trucking and warehousing companies headquartered in Washington County, which make good use of the county's highway system and provide excellent transportation services to local businesses and industry.
Along the eastern border of the county, the Monongahela River provides a link to ports along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. An estimated 36.8 million tons of coal, petroleum and other materials are shipped along the Monongahela annually.
The Washington County Airport located on Route 18, south of the city of Washington, accommodates smaller aircraft including business jets. The airport is the fourth busiest in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
