Veterninary clinic among several Peters Township projects

A store that prided itself on comfortable furniture is being repurposed into a facility providing creature comforts.

University Veterinarian Specialists plans to open a clinic on Route 19 in Peters Township — where Colonial Modern Furniture previously operated. The building at 2810 Washington Road is being renovated and, according to Peters planning director Ed Zuk, is targeted to open in the fall.

Mike Brueggman, chief administrative officer of the company and a township resident, could not be reached for comment.

Another renovation is unfolding two miles to the south along Washington Road. Legacy Medical Center is putting on a small addition and redoing its facade.

Plans are being prepared for other township projects, including Goldfish Swim School, a standalone facility at 690 Crosswinds Drive, where groundbreaking is expected soon, according to Zuk. Scott Payne is the owner. Zuk added that Primrose Child Care Center is preparing to submit plans for a 12,000-square-foot day care facility at Waterdam and Galley roads.

New ‘Planet’ coming

New construction continues to monopolize the landscape at Park Place at the Meadowlands.

Since the winter chill passed, work has accelerated on Planet Fitness and 206 rental units being built near the intersection of Route 19 and Racetrack Road in North Strabane Township.

“Bad weather is behind us and we’re rocking and rolling,” said Dave Biafora of Morgantown, W.Va.-based Metro Property Management, developer of the mixed-use project,

The skeleton of the fitness center, on a hill off Route 19 on the north end of the complex, is essentially complete. And work is well under way on the 116 apartments and 90 townhouses that Biafora described as “upscale.” Initial leases should be signed this spring or in early summer.

Down the hill, he said, construction is ready to begin on an L-shaped building to be erected behind the BFS Foods superstore near the main entrance. It will be like the two existing retail/restaurant structures on the property, two stories with shopping and dining options on the first story and offices on the second.

Park Place opened in October 2013 with the launch of the superstore, which features gas pumps, a car wash and three BFS franchisees: Tim Hortons restaurant, Little Caesars Pizza and Dairy Queen Grill & Chill. The superstore and the L-shaped structure to be built are on the sliver of the project that is in South Strabane Township.
