The health care industry of Washington County has responded well to the demands of its residents. The health care in Washington County has provided quality services unparalleled in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Canonsburg General Hospital
A Proud Tradition
In 1903, the ladies of the Shakespeare Club of Canonsburg recognized that their Washington County community needed a hospital. They purchased and renovated a farmhouse, which served as the first Canonsburg General Hospital. In 1912, the hospital grew to a total of 12 beds. That same year, the Canonsburg General Hospital School of Nursing opened and continued to train nurses for the next 48 years. A new, 54-bed hospital opened in 1929 - by 1960 the facility had nearly doubled its capacity. In 1983, the hospital moved to its present location, and an Ambulatory Care Center was added in 1996. The hospital became a part of the West Penn Allegheny Health System in 2000. Canonsburg General is now a 120-bed facility with 485 employees and almost 200 medical staff members.
Serving the Community
Located in one of the growing regions of Southwest Pennsylvania, Canonsburg General provides a range of medical and surgical services to the citizens of Washington County and southern Allegheny County. The hospital offers emergency services, cardiac catheterization, occupational medicine and a home care program to individuals in the service area. It also offers specialized services in acute inpatient rehabilitation.
Canonsburg General embraces the community it serves through its many outreach programs. The hospital has a long-standing relationship with several local school districts to provide in-school health programming through Project Healthy Children. The Canonsburg General Emergency Department also serves as the focal point for two important community safety programs, "Watchful Shepherd" and "Lifeline," which provide vital links to medical and protective services for abused children and older adults respectively. Throughout the year, a variety of health education programs and health screenings are offered to area residents, free-of-charge.
Canonsburg General received 18,373 emergency visits, 54,545 outpatient visits and admitted over 4,100 inpatients in 2000.
Future Plans
Future plans for Canonsburg General Hospital include a $2.95 million renovation and expansion of its Emergency Department due to increased patient volume. Other projects include increasing the primary care physician base, implementing a comprehensive services excellence program and renovating the nursing units.
Monongahela Valley Hospital
When Monongahela Valley Hospital opened its Women's Health Center at the Vista One Professional Center in Speers in November 2000, it extended the healthcare system's longstanding tradition of growth and advancement of services. It also symbolized the hospital's mission to improve the health of all residents of the mid-Monongahela Valley.
The MVH Women's Health Center provides state-of-the-art mammography and ultrasound testing. It was opened in response to an increase in the number of women coming to the hospital for mammogram and ultrasound procedures, which showed a definite need for those services. By opening the Women's Health Center, the hospital doubled its capacity to offer mammograms and increased its ultrasound services by fifty percent.
Rapid growth also prompted Monongahela Valley Hospital to relocate its Occupational Health program to the Vista One Professional Center. In existence for less than a year, MVH Occupational Health has over 200 clients - businesses and companies representing approximately 14,600 workers. In conjunction with the Occupational Health move to larger facilities in Speers, the hospital also has opened another Valley Outpatient Rehabilitation site at Vista One.
Formed in 1972, Monongahela Valley Hospital is a full-service facility with a 180-member medical staff representing over 40 medical specialties. The hospital offers comprehensive oncology services, including a Regional Cancer Center, the first of its kind in Washington County, for radiation therapy and chemotherapy and an Inpatient Unit for the treatment of cancer.
MVH also offers medical/surgical, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatric and rehabilitation services; critical and cardiac care; emergency medicine; a Skilled Care Center and a SameDay Surgery Center.
With nearly 1,000 employees, Monongahela Valley Hospital is the largest employer in the mid-Monongahela Valley and the third largest employer in Washington County. As such, the healthcare system plays a vital and viable role in the area's economic structure by generating revenues back into the community in the purchase of products and services and the payment by employees of taxes to municipalities and school districts.
The Washington Hospital
For more than 100 years, The Washington Hospital has provided quality health care services. It is supported by a staff of more than 2,000 highly qualified personnel as well as 230 primary care and specialty physicians, 90 percent of whom are board certified.
From its beginning in 1897, the hospital partnered with the community to fulfill the area's health care needs. Today, the hospital prides itself on offering comprehensive health services so that the community's needs can be met close to home. The Washington Hospital provides 24-hour inpatient, outpatient and emergency medical and surgical care. There are 18 locations throughout Washington and Greene counties. The hospital also offers a wide array of services, including:

- Strabane Woods of Washington assisted living, providing an elegant housing and lifestyle alternative for seniors.
The Washington Hospital is very proud of its national recognition as one of America's 100 top orthopedic hospitals, as well as an internationally recognized innovator in health care information technology.
A major element of the hospital's mission as a health care provider is education. The Washington Hospital School of Nursing has graduated thousands of nurses since its founding in 1897. The Washington Hospital Family Practice Residency Program was among the first chartered programs in Pennsylvania to provide training of family practice physicians. The Washington Hospital School of Radiologic Technology has been providing excellent radiology education for more than 50 years. Each year, the hospital invests thousands of hours and dollars in free community education programs for local residents.
Working hand-in-hand with many community organizations, the hospital has helped to improve the quality of life for many local residents through such programs as the Teen Outreach program to reduce teen pregnancies, the Washington County Health Partners, Inc., to improve the overall health status of the community and many other local agencies that enrich the lives of area residents.
The hospital's financial contributions, volunteerism and service on various committees and Boards of Directors are well known throughout Washington County. The hospital has, since it's founding, more than fulfilled the mission of its founders that it not only would be a place to care for the sick and injured, but it would become an institution of lasting value.
